Contributions to the Study of Classical Philately and Postal History of Great Britain and the Commonwealth

In the year 1981 was the laying of the foundation-stone of the first series of booklets. The Society published in the past years the following booklets on its own risks:

This gives a systematic overview of the Wilding issues (including the anniversary issues) arranged by value and dealing with the watermarks, paper etc. giving SG (specialised and ordinary) and Michel catalogue numbers. This begins with the early history of the newspaper and calendar taxes and then describes postmarks for printed matter of all kinds, as well as those for packages, and lists the post offices which used these marks.
This treats the history of these typically British stamps, from post-free cachets used by members of the aristocracy, parliament and the church to the early hooded circle marks, their intended purposes, etc.
This study treats the postal service in Jamaica (from the beginning to modern times), postmarks of the pre-stamp and the early philatelic periods, the "squared circle" marks and other marks including modern ones.
The subjects treated are: forerunners, the "Dockwra" post and the London Twopenny Post, the London Inland Section, the London District post, the provincial post in England and Wales, the provincial post in Scotland, the provincial post in Ireland, the changing post offices of London, railway mail. This particular type of mark is very popular with postmark collectors, with particular relevance to Great Britain as it was "invented" in London and tried out in post offices there. But an abundance of postmarks of this type were also used in some British colonies, as well as in the Dutch overseas territories and in countries such as Italy and elsewhere. This work describes the different types used in 29 countries, colonies and territories from A to Z.
The first stamps used as receipts for additional postage came into use in 1914, though this came to an end in 1995. However, postmarks are in use, which developed originally from handwritten notes about the postage which was to be collected from the addressee. Therefore this area of stamp collecting has come to an end, though not the collecting of the relevant postmarks. One of the most historically interesting countries of the former British Empire, illustrated by its stamps and postmarks which - if one ignores the first eight issues - are also affordable. This book gives some interesting philatelic facts which are not treated in detail in the catalogues.

This series will be continued. Volume XI (Mauritius) was presented to the public on the International Stamp Fair in Sindelfingen (Germany) in October 2005. All the booklets may be ordered for the price between EUR 5.00 and EUR 10.00 (plus packaging and shipping) each directly from the Editor.
